Dysmenorrhea is a medical term for painful menstruation or menstrual cramps which all females have gone through at least once in their lifetime. Some females are lucky to not go through the pain and some go through debilitating pain. Tylenol is the only solution for these cases. Dysmenorrhea should not be pleasant feeling as endometrium of the uterus is shedding and bleeding however it should not be painful to the degree of debilitation. There are some suspects to what is causing dysmenorrhea in Western medicine but it in Chinese medicine they have a different approach to dysmenorrhea.  The number one cause is stress which disturbs smooth flow of circulation. The secondary cause is usually the hormonal imbalance. Another recent research suspected BPA, a chemical substance from plastic can be a reason for dysmenorrhea as it disturbs hormonal balances for females.

In TCM, they think the pain is due to blood or qi not flowing smoothly. It is similar to getting on a subway during the rush hour, uncomfortable and irritating. Sometimes there might not be enough blood in the body causing circulatory issue leading to dysmenorrhea.  Regardless of the situation in Chinese medicine all the perspective is seen and carefully adjusted to best suit the needs of the patient and their conditions.
